The battle of the brains starts today at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth. The tournament brings together more that 2000 participants from across South Africa in the annual South Africa Junior Chess Championships.
Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism marketing manager Titus Chuene says the city of Nelson Mandela Bay is proud to host one of the biggest Chess events in the country.
Chess Grandmaster Susan Polgar is also expected to visit the chess tournament in the city.

Great games, outrageous outfits, fabulous fun, and wonderful weather, rugby's biggest party was right here in the Bay.
Even with the Blitzbokke's hair-breadth loss to the All-blacks, the rugby crowd was in frenzied support of all the teams that graced the magnificent Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. With more than 40,000 spectators at the stadium, the atmosphere was amazing.
Nelson Mandela Bay will host the IRB 7s for four more years, promising bigger and better tournaments in the next few years.

It's party time here in Nelson Mandela Bay. Rugby's biggest party kicks off this morning at the magnificent Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The South African leg of the IRB Sevens Rugby World Series, the third in the series, is set against the backdrop of South Africa's friendliest city, the pristine beaches of Algoa bay, the best national anthem singing crowd of spectators and a rugby party fever like no other.

The games are fast paced and electrifying, just as the atmosphere in the bay is. If you haven't got your ticket yet, there is no better time to do it than NOW. Chess Grandmaster to visit Nelson Mandela Bay

Chess Grandmaster Susan Polgar will grace the South African Junior Chess Championship to be held in Nelson Mandela Bay from 12 to 22 December.
The championship, to be held at the NMMU sports centre, will bring together about 2000 players from around the country.
“It is truly special for our city will host such a notable personality in the chess world. Polgar has many records under her belt and her presence in the friendly city will inspire many young players in South Africa,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism marketing manager Titus Chuene.
Grandmaster Polger was the first woman to qualify for the “men’s” World Championship and earned her Grandmaster title in 1991. She became the world number one woman chess player at the age of 15 and remained in the top three for nearly 23 years. She has won ten Olympic medals and four Women’s World Championships.
She is also the only Grandmaster in the history of the game to win the Triple Crown; Rapid, Blitz and Classical World Championships.
The tournament in Nelson Mandela Bay will feature the best of provincial teams from around the country.
The tournament is being hosted by the Port Elizabeth Chess fraternity, which has in recent months been working at developing the game in schools around Nelson Mandela Bay.

Looking down on the eastern part of St George's Park, one can see most of the sporting facilities that the park has to offer. Right in the middle is the St George's Park Cricket Ground, South Africa's oldest cricket test stadium. The B-field is also where Crusaders Sports Club is based. To the right of the B-field are the Park Drive and Port Elizabeth Bowling Clubs, the latter being the oldest lawn bowling club in the country. The St George's Park Swimming Pool is visible right in the middle of the picture with the Port Elizabeth Lawn Tennis Club (no grass courts anymore unfortunately) below it. To the left of the tennis courts is the old Scottish Cemetery and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum next to it.

This aerial photo shows the old slipway at Humewood Beach. The slipway was used as a dry dock before the construction of the Port Elizabeth harbour in the 1930's. Boats would sail in between the pillars before being pulled out of the water onto the slipway by means of a steam pulley. Today the slipway offers snorkelers and trainee divers the ideal spot to explore the underwater world.

This gives film crews and recreational divers the ideal opportunity to see the sardines in their natural surrounds being pursued by dolphins, whales and marine birds. For the lucky few, as seen in this video by Port Elizabeth based dive operator Pro Dive, there is also the opportunity to spot Orcas.

A number of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism's Board members were taken on a tour focusing on tourism heritage, history and development plans for the Northern Areas and other key tourism nodes of the city recently. It also included some of the lesser known as well as new attractions around Port Elizabeth and I was lucky enough to be able to tag along for the ride.

The first stop on the tour was the South African Airforce Museum behind the Port Elizabeth Airport. Every time I visit the SA Airforce Museum I try to figure out why there isn't more people visiting the museum as they have a fantastic collection of aircraft and memorabilia and is interesting for both young and old.

Other than the main museum section of the SA Airforce Museum, the museum also has a hanger next door where aircraft are serviced and repaired. This section is also open to the public and quite an interesting addition to the museum for aircraft enthusiasts.

The tour included the historic section of Bethelsdorp where the group visited the Van Der Kemp Memorial Church, first built in 1803 by missionary, Dr Johannes Van Der Kemp.

The long white building on the left is the Almshouses which was built by the London Missionary Society in 1822 as part of the mission station. They are still used to assist and accommodate the poor and destitute from the community.

NMBT CEO Mandlakazi Skefile buying traditional roosterkoek at a women's driven project in New Brighton township

One of the stops on the township tour leg of the trip was at the site of the new Red Location Backpackers. Part of the project is a women's project where traditional foods and activities will be introduced to visitors. Although the project is still in its development faze, the woman are already selling things like traditional roosterkoek to the local community.

The group was also taken onto the construction site to see where the backpackers lodge will be located.

Sizzling summer season for Bay

TOPPING a year of fun under the South African sun, the summer season in Nelson Mandela Bay has been heralded as a huge success by organisers and government officials with well attended beach activities and a programme of top national artists such as Jamali, Danny K and Pro Kid.

“This summer season has been a roaring success on all fronts,” said Greg Moses of Go Big Events, official organisers of the NMB Summer Season. “But, over and above the success of our sports and entertainment programme, we must emphasize the achievements of the Lost Kids campaign which oversaw the safety of seven thousand children on Nelson Mandela Bay beaches over the height of the holiday season.”

Of the 7610 children whose details were taken and recorded on armbands, 91 were lost – and all reunited with their parents, added Moses.

The rainy and windy weather on New Years weekend did not keep Nelson Mandela Bay visitors and residents off its biggest beaches – as shown by the number of children “tagged” on January 1 and January 2. Over 4760 children under the age of 12 were tagged. The children were fitted with a bracelet with their names and contact details of their parents or guardians.

PE-born celebs return to their roots to see Bay through a tourist’s eyes

INVITING home-grown success stories back to Nelson Mandela Bay to be tourists in their old hometown is a fresh approach to marketing the city by Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT).

Last week, Johannesburg-based editor of the South African branch of the sexy, tongue-in-cheek, men’s lifestyle magazine, FHM, Hagen Engler and his high-flying wife Nomfundo, events coordinator for high-profile company Omage, were invited by NMBT to experience the city as tourists.

So, the weather wasn’t that great – drizzle and overcast – but still the couple were blown away by their experience.

“Who said far-flung honorary homies from the PE-side can’t return to the city of their birth – and the place where multiple teeth were cut… and lost – to check out the changes to the cityscape through a new pair of rose coloured glasses,” quipped Hagen, a legendary Bay local and columnist, novelist, blogger, singer and soon-to-be filmmaker, as one of his novels Greener Grass - based on the “quasi-fictional” shenanigans of a heyday in the Bay – is set to be shot next year.

NMBT headed by top new Chairs

FORMER Port Elizabeth Regional Chamber of Commerce CEO Odwa Mtati was elected yesterday as the new Chairperson of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT), while Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Complex General Manager Clifford Ngakane was elected as the Vice-Chair.

Their election comes a week after the election of a sterling new NMBT board, consisting of a diverse group of top Nelson Mandela Bay leaders.

“As a collective, the new board’s responsibility is to ensure that we help market and improve the face and impression of Nelson Mandela Bay as a top tourism destination, while also recognising the achievements and foundations laid by the previous board,” said Mtati.

SAMREC penguin release

Last night I received a notice from the SAMREC Facebook group that there will be a penguin release at Hobie Beach in Port Elizabeth this morning (Wednesday 1 December 2010). The South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre at Cape Recife was opened in 2009 and cares mainly for sick or injured African penguins because of their vulnerability. The centre is open from 09:00 to 16:30 daily and offers tours of the premises and the bird hospital to visitors. They also have an educational program to inform and educate school kids about the coast, oceans, penguins and other marine life.

The ten African Penguins that were due for release arrived in three crates under the watchful eye of Jared Harding, SAMREC's Animal Manager.

As soon as the first crate was opened, one of the adult penguins popped out over the top and made a run for it...

... until he realised that he was all on his own.

The three crates were all turned over shortly after the attempted escape and the penguins headed for the blue waters of Algoa Bay.

It was interesting to see how one of the adults took the lead. Its easy to spot the juveniles as they haven't got their adult colours yet.

For some reason this lot came to a halt before entering the water. It looked like they weren't really in the mood for a swim.

After a bit of encouragement from the SAMREC volunteers on the beach, the penguins headed off into the bay. The weather was perfect and the sea flat, so their swim out towards the islands would have been a relatively easy one.

The whole process was watched with interest by a group of kids that were enjoying the stunning beach weather Port Elizabeth had dished up for us today.

Japanese ‘eco-voluntourists’ plant gardens at Bay schools

TWO Nelson Mandela Bay schools shared the experience of “true responsible tourism” this weekend when over 50 Japanese tree-planting volunteers arrived to sow the seeds of cultural exchange and sustainable development with the teachers and pupils.

Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) marketing manager, Titus Chuene, endorsed the project saying the Japanese group was leading by example.

“We wish more people could show this kind of initiative as tourists – not only did they come here on their own steam, but they are contributing to internationalisation, leaving their mark – quite literally – on the Nelson Mandela Bay landscape and committing to sustainable and responsible tourism,” said Chuene, who spent two hours on Sunday at Siyaphambili Public Middle School in support of the project.

Sevens rugby kick-starts summer season

THE fifth annual Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens rugby tournament is set to kick-start the summer season with entertainment for the whole family on December 3 and 4.

The largest rugby participation event in Africa will see 1 200 players descend on Andrew Rabie High School in Port Elizabeth next Friday and Saturday in a battle of guts and glory.

Tournament organiser Laurence Finn said the tournament had drawn numerous national and international players over the years, with the Vipers (Emerging Springboks) among the former champions.

“The event also has a reputation for showcasing future stars,” he said. Sevens Springbok and EP Kings wing Norman Nelson is a former Player of the Tournament and Top Try Scorer.

High school teams will take on defending champions Brandwag and Daniel Pienaar in the hotly contested U/15 and U/19 categories respectively. Progress, the Uitenhage-based Eastern Province Grand Challenge club champions, will head the open section.

“As always, the old boys’ teams will feature former Springbok, Super 14 and Currie Cup players,” said Finn. The eight teams will tackle each other in an exciting 10-man format.

Finn said the corporate touch rugby component had once again proved popular.

Rose Trehaevens Haunted Historical Walks

It is alleged that Port Elizabeth has an over-abundance of "ghosts" lurking in Central Hill, the city's oldest suburb and historical heartland.

Langa Memorial

The Langa memorial serves as a strong reminder of a time long forgotten and evokes, for some, the painful memories of decades past. It was here where 20 people were shot dead by police as they mourned the 25th anniversary of the Sharpville massacre of 1960. The memorial can be found in Maduna Road in Uitenhage, just outside the Langa Township, where the massacre took place in 1985. The official launch of the offices was held on 26 September 2007, to commemorate National Tourism Month and as a curtain raiser to World Tourism Day celebrations, on 27 September.

The SANParks reservation offices are located within the Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism Information Centres - at the Boardwalk, Donkin and Uitenhage, as well as the Call Centre at the NMBT office in South End.The offices are a first for the Eastern Cape and offer a one-stop source of information & accommodation bookings port for all South African National Parks, as well as a purchasing point for the SANParks wildcard, which entitles the bearer to free access at all SANParks.

Port Elizabeth Main Library

The Port Elizabeth Main library started through the benevolence of some South African philanthropists in 1835. It was converted into a court house in 1854. The library operated in several places until 31 July 1902 when it was opened on the permanent site. In 1983, the library was accepted as a landmark in Port Elizabeth and received the status of being declared a historical site. The Victorian architecture and terra-cotta finish together with the marble statue of Queen Victoria at the entrance makes this a classic site worth visiting.

The Port Elizabeth City hall is located in the heart of the city, this area also represents the commercial center of excellence for the community. The city hall took a period of four years, from 1858 to1862, to be completed. The clock tower was added as a new landmark feature in 1883. By 1973, the government listed the hall as a national monument, but unfortunately in 1977, the hall burnt down. It has since been rebuilt to its former glory due to its historical value. City hall serves as a historical landmark representing years gone by.
